One of the most significant works of Greek post-war sculpture, George Lappas’ Mappemonde traces the map of the world as a sculptural narrative, drawing on personal experiences. Mappemonde consists of a perforated metal house along with 3,000 sculpted figures populating the surrounding space. These interdependent figures form a synthesis of bodies —a crowd— which alludes to the idea of archaeological accumulation, and can be seen as a depiction of intercultural worlds coming together, or as a history of humankind. Extending from the 2^nd to the 10^th floor of the Athens Capital Hotel - Mgallery Collection atrium, “Mappemonde,” comes as a delineated, “encapsulated” memory field which is in turn “encapsulated” into the memory of an urban residence. This as charting, a sculptural narrative that starts from the artist’s personal experiences but at the same time opens up to a universal scale.
